There have been two by-elections siine the present Government took office, and it has lost both of them, comments the “ Lyttelton 'I imes.” It is significant that both Eden and Raglan were formerly field hv members of the ministry, so that the decisions of the electors at the polls must be taken to indicate deep and widespread dissatisfaction with the Reform Government. Doubtloss we shall be told that votesplitting was the chief factor in ensuring the defeat of the Government nominee at Raglan, and, even if that were conceded, there would bo an element of poetic justice about it, seeing that for so many years the Reformers! have been able to retain office by virtue i of that very defect. This unmistakable setback may cause the Government to consider whether there is not a real need for the electoral reforms which the Liberals have long advocated.
