('.in-' to brighten up tho appearance of r •dilciiti.il frontages by a more goncral cUan-un than is usually the case. One advantage of a public utility to which the daylight saving visitation might he turned, would ho in the direction of section-holders smartening up the appearance of their immediate frontages. A lead could well he given by the local authority in this matter by extending tlie class of work recently don? in AYeld Street, where the rough grass grown road sides were" removed and the locality left in a more sightly condition by gravelling. The co-opera-tion of the citizens in cleaning up work of this nature would he well worth while, for the result would lie very pleasing and encouraging enough to extend the operations generally. AVhnt the Borough Council is now doing in tho way of leeching and channelling in some of the streets in permanent material, is also helpful, and there is room for more of this class of work as funds permit. The ordinary spring cleaning with tho active cooperation of the residents might ho taken up with as little delay as possible,- so that before the holiday season conic round, the town will look bettor cared for and present a more pleasing appearance to the visitor* who are expected here in the coming season in larger numbers than here-to-fore. Naturally in any small community where the income of the local body is restricted, the general appearance of the town reflects somewhat on the personal activities of the people themselves. There is always something they can do which will assist to improve appearances, and in many of the streets, and certainly the residential section, there is scope for active working bees to display useful activities. Citizenship has obligations, and pride, in respect to the directions to which better citizenship can he displayed. The matter is therefore commended to the general public in the hope that with more leisure coming after the day’s work, one direction in which it will he turned will he to improve the general appearance of the public thoroughfares.
