THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES
Tiik Taxation Bi.unukh. For years past, the Government lias taxed the country so heavily that it has annually bad huge surpluses at its disposal. From them, it lias taken large amounts for the redemption of public debt, in excess of statutory obligations, and for other purposes, and lias persisted in this policy in spite of the evident need for husbanding its resources and giving relief to taxpayers. Criticism of its actions in that respect, is now fully justified in the implied confession that the Treasury needs replenishment. It open tame lias, however, come too late. The. country cannot a (ford to pay more taxation) any attempt to enforce the proposed increases will inevitably prejudice the progress towards economic recovery, and produce reactions to which the Government cannot be indifferent. The taxing Bill is a blunder into which the Government could not have fallen had it not been utterly ignorant of the difficulties under which taxpayers are labouring and utterly insensible to public opinion. —“ New Zealand Herald.”
