Tim movement which has been started to provide radio receiving sets for the two local hospitals is a very commendable one and recalling the philanthropic spirit which prevails throughout the town and district we quite expect it to be a success. The proposal is to select good standard machines, equal to loud daylight receptions, and to extend loud speaker connections to tbe requisite wards. This service will provide recreation and news, as well as instruction which should tend to brighten very greatly tbe hours in the hospitals. Australian programmes may be nicked up almost at any hour of the day, while New Zealand stations are now broadcasting in the afternoon. Of particular interest would bo the rebroadcasting from a central station of long distance radio, say from England. the continent of T'urope, or America, which it is often possible to nick up in tbe late afternoons. As the tests of this long distance radio are perfected, tlio use of receiving sots will grow in value, for it myans that tbe whole entertainment of tbe world at large may be brought in by a good receiving set. Tn various parts of New Zealand wireless receiving sets are being installed in hospitals. Ti* Australia they, are generally established in hospitals, and the early bedtime stories are often specially addressed to the children’s hospitals in Australia. The vogue of the wireless is now very general, and as a means to bring entertainment and relaxation to the inmates of hospitals, "it would l»e difficult to find anything more satisfactory. There is a world of variety supplied in the daily programmes which should satisfy all tastes. The movement is therefore worthy of generous support. A local committee lias taken 011 the task, and with offers of willing help on all sides tbe financial needs should be met. Tt was a happy thought to include, both hospitals in the effort, for each lias special claims on the community for support in the direction intended. It remains only to commend the proposal to the good graces of the people, and to suggest that the measure of help to be given will be given promptly so as to lighten the task of those responsible for the undertaking. The work of the committee set up' in tlio matter is sure to find very generous and general support.
