PALMERSTON N.. Sept. 27,

The weather for the Rugby trial North Island Possibles v. Probables is cold with a. bleak easterly wind. Despite the fact of the game not being played on. a half holiday a large attendance of the public is fully anticipated. All selected players assembled here yesterday. The tennis as published will take the field early this afternoon.

PALMERSTON N., Sept. 27. The finn] trial of North Island players prior to the inter-island match was played here this afternoon in the presence of a large crowd. The teams took the field as selected. The Possibles played against an easterly wind. Play hovered in midfield, Nicliolls narrowly missing a goal from a penalty for the Possibles. Keene intercepted a pass but was downed by Brown and failed to send on the ball, a good chance to score being lost. The Possibles were soon again on the attack. Nicliolls goaled from a penalty within a good range. The play ranged up and down, the field mostly in favour of the Possibles. Bropliv put the Probables on the attack but went jut touch. The Probable forwards, beaded by Finlayson, who was playing a great game, broke away but the | movement halted. i The attack by Possibles narrowly missed a score. Finlayson led his forwards to the Possibles line, a knock-on stopping a certain score. Possible forwards led by Galpin and Porter rushed to Probables’ line where, from a scrum, Kilby worked the blind side and Rushbrook scored. Nicliolls narrowly failed 6—o. Hook broke clear but passed out when danger threatened, and it went to Grenside who cleared. From the play in Probables territory Hook kicked through and racing to score, was collared by Brown when almost on the ball. An,obstruction try was awarded and Berriclge goaled with a beautiful kick 5—6.

From the scrum at half way McManus set Probables rearguard moving, Sheen scoring after Brown had floored Hook. Berridge goaled with another great kick. 10—6. Nicholls failed with an opportunity to reduce the deficit from a penalty, and the spell ended with the score unchanged. PALMERSTON N-. Sept. 27.
