CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD.
The Canterbury Education Board met on Friday. Present; Messrs C. S. Thompson (chairman), J. Maze, G. W. Armitnge, IV. H. Wiiisor, J. iG. Gow, E. H. Andrews, IV. Johnson, R. Wild, and T. Hughes.
The School Medical Officer reported having completely or partially examined 2150 pupils, interviewed 383 parents, and sent notices to 1640. The nurses had visited IS) schools, had taken 14 pupils personally to the Hospital Dental service, and examined 3394 pupils for medical schedules.
OVERCROWDING. A letter was received from the Phillipstown Committee stressing the necessity of the Board taking early steps to disestablish the model school in order to relieve the over-crowding in the infant department. it was resolved to inform the committee that the Board had interviewed the Director of Education and he had promised to give the matter early consideration. WEST COAST.
In reply to the Board’s application for a grant for the erection of a permanent school in the district, the Department enquired if the Board had considered whether it would he economical and practical to remove the La Fontaine School to Evan’s Creek. It was resolved to inform the Department that the Board had already considered the proposal, but owing to the age and condition of the La Fontaine school it had been decided to take no action in this direction. MISCELLANEOUS.
A memorandum was received from the Department, stating that it could not, in the present financial circumstances, see its way to continue the provision of one-third of the cost of installing hot water heating in schools already provided with open fireplaces, hut that the matter would receive consideration later. GENERAL. The Committee’s application for the painting of the. Koiteraogi school building was referred to the foreman for report. Navy League competition: The League’s request for permission to conduct a “Nelson Day Essay Competition” was granted, subject to approval of local committees. Return: Funds raised locally for school purpose since Ist January, 1925, amount to £12.523, besides considerable unknown sums on which no subsidy lias been asked. In connection with an application for a special rate for conveyance of Wataroa pupils living over five miles from school, it was resolved to offer lOd per pupil. In connection with an application for extension of bus service, it was resolved that the Board’s present undertaking of Is per pupil cannot he increased.
Dobson: Mr Wild moved that in view of the anticipated increase in attendance at Dobson having now taken place and the urgent need for additional room application be made lo the Department for an extra room and temporary provision he made lor an extra teacher in the meantime.—Carried.
The control of Dental Nurse was referred to the Appointments Committee.
