Owing to the dismissal of a trucker tbe Roa mine was idle on Tuesday. Tim management agreed to reinstate the dismissed employee in another section of the mine, and work was resumed on Wednesday.

Seddon has asked the Commissioner of State Forests whether, in view of expert opionion given in the State Forest report regarding the liberation of opossums, lie wii'l confer with bis colleague, the Acting-Minister of Internal Affairs, relative to the liberation of approved breeds of opossums in the hack country of Westland.
One effect of the new customs tariff will almost certainly he an inerbase in the price of radio sets, after present stocks are exhausted. Under the new tariff wireless broadcasting receiving sets mounted in cabinets will be subject to a duty of 10 per cent if British and 30 per cent if foreign. British sets not mounted in cabinets will be admitted free; foreign sets must pay 20 per cent.

Owing to the inclement weather tho final shoot of the Hokitika Gun Club did not take place yesterday. The shoot will taken place next Sunday, Oct. 2nd.
The District High School Jingby team which played the Westport Technical School a match on Saturday at Westport, was victorious by 8 points to nil'. It is understood the basketball teams which visited Roefton were not so successful.
On Saturday afternoon, Mr and Mrs Tlios. Ferny, Cobden, celebrated their golden wedding, having been married in Nelson, on September 24, 1877. Miami Mrs Fcary have been tho recipients of many congratulatory letters and telegrams.
The friends of Mr and Mrs Win. Wilson, of Cobden, will regret sincerely to learn of the death of their eleven-year-old son, Colin John, which occurred at Grey Hospital on Saturday afternoon. This is the third member of the family to be taken within the past year.
Tlie weather experienced for the week end was of the very stormiest and unpleasant. A heavy south-westerly gale blew with force. There was heavy rain and occasional hail showers and the atmosphere was very cold on Sunday, the wind being very bitter. During the early hours of Sunday there was a severe thunderstorm.

Nows was received on Saturday of the death of Mrs Mcllvenev. wife of Detective Mcllvenev, of Auckland, eldest sister of Mr H. Jones and brothers of Hokitika and Kokatahi district. The deceased was ail invalid for some months past and suffered severely. Her demise was not unexpected, but will be regretted generally, herself and family ln»iiic so well known throughout the district.
There is considerable speculation in the lobbies of Parliament as to the result of tlie Ragi'an election next Thursday. The concensus of opinion is that tlie contest will resolve itself into one between Mr H. Waring, the Official Reform candidate, and Mr Lee Martin. It is suggested that Mr Waring can lose 2000 of the votes which were given to the Hon. Mr Bollard in 1020. and win, provided that the lost votes are distributed over the other four candidates. If they go to Mr Lee Martin, however, the result is considered to bo a sure victory for the Labour Party, as the recognised Labour vote in the electorate is round about 1500.
