BRISBANE. Sept. 21. Basil fires have continued to sweep the Esk district, north of Ipswich. Many thousands of acres have been burned out. and miles of fencing has been destroyed. The fires show no signs of diminishing, and many of the outlying settlements are endangered.

QUAKE IN TASMANIA. HOBART, Sc-pt. 21. A distinct earth tremor, lasting for several seconds, was experienced here. Houses shook and many people ruslied into the streets, fearing the buildings would collapse, but no damage was reported.
