A Government Gazette states that a petition for the winding up of the Labour Daily Newspaper Ltd., has been presented by the Afunicipal Council of Sydney, which is stated in the notice to be a creditor of the Company. Premier Ifogati estimates the surplus for the current year at £27,850. The rate ot tax on incomes from personal exertion will be increased by a penny in flic pound and on companies, other than life assurance, by twopence. Stamp duties on cheques wit! lie increased from a penny to twopence. Tlm duty 011 the transfer of land and sale of shares will be Oil for every £lO, with a minimum payment of 5s on any certificate.
ROYAL SHOW. -MELBOURNE, Sepl. 21. A notable feature of the stud stock sales in connection with the .Melbourne Royal Show is the low prices realized. ’I he top price for a Clydesdale was 67. V guineas; for Jersey bulls 105 guineas, and for a cow 68 guineas.
CARMEN’S WAGES. MELBOURNE, Sept. 21. Hie Federal Management Committee of the Seamen's Union modified the demands contained in tiro log (cabled on "1 711 1 August). Members.of tlm Union adopted a proposal that the committee, should agree to negotiate with employers on the basis of Hie existing agreement but on condition there be no reduction of wages.
FAMOUS PICTURE. MELBOURNE. Sept. 21. The Trustees of Felton bequest have purchased for the National Art Gallery, Tintoretn's famous picture of “A Dog, by Epictro T.orcdano,” from the collection of Prince Lielmiow.sky, formerly German Ambassador to Britain. The price is 11,000 guineas.
BUSH FIRES IN QUEENSLAND. BRISBANE, Sept. 21. Bush fires in the lEsk district have caused very considerable damage to property and fencing. Residents are fighting the flames which came within half a mile of Esk township. A man, Julius Schulz- who was trapped bv ll:c flames, was so serjo.usly burned that he .succumbed. SUGAR, CROP. BRISBANE. Sept. 21. Jt is stated the sugar cane crop in Queensland this year will hr three and a half million yielding -ICO,COO tons of sugar.
