FIVE GREAT SCOURGES. LONDON. Sept. 10. ! Sir George Newman, Chief Medical Officer of the Ministry of Health and Hoard of Education, reports that 50 years of progress in the matter of health lias more than halved the deathrate. Sir George draws attention to the willingness of people to live in the open air, to their increased sobriety and improved housing, and to an immense awakening to the value of health facilities now offered by the State. The deadly diseases, he says, still remain much the same. In order, the big five are diseases of the heart, respiratory organs, cancer, nerves and tuberculosis. Sir George adds that all defects in diet can be corrected by the addition of milk and green vegetables, and advocates the institution of a system of confidential death certificates, so as to enable doctors unhesitatingly and accurately to state the exact causes.
