Brevne. on a charge of obtaining possession of a house on the representation that ho required it for himself, whereas he subsequently relet it, was fined £lO and costs -at the Police Court this morning. FLIGHT STARTS TO-MORROW. AUCKLAND, Sept. 19. Flight-Lieut. Frewen is expected to make the flight to-morrow from Kempsie, New South Wales to Lord Howe Island, Norfolk Island and thence to Auckland. In all numerous arrangements for landing here have been made by au Auckland firm. LICENSE TBAXSFER RED. PALMERSTON N., Sept. 19. A meeting of the Licensing Bench heard the Rev. Peat (a Methodist
Minister), in support of the petition objecting to the transfer of a hotel license from the. Square to Cuba Street. The objections raised were on the ground that the new hotel would be near tho two churches on the new site proposed for the school. Licensed premises were not required in that neighbourhood as the quiet neighbourhood would be disturbed. -Mr Stout. S.M., Chairman of tho Licensing Committee, said Cuba Street was not. a residential area and the license had to go somewhere. The petitioners case was not strong enough to prevent the removal of the license which the Committee agreed to.

FARM HOUSE DESTROYED. AUCKLAND, Sept. IS. An eight-roomed farm house at Milieu’s Hill, Howiek. owned by Robert Millen, and occupied by his son and family, was destroyed by fire early on Saturday morning. Mrs Milieu was awakened by the sound of flames. Bousing the family and two farm hands, "she made her escape, together with the other ooceupants, just in time. Tho house, which was insured for £BOO, was totally destroyed. Tho furniture was insured for £SOO.

CADET’S IN NW ZEALAND
AUCKLAND, Sept. 17
Five young Egyptians arrived in Auckland this morning by the Middlesex, on which ship they are cadets. Together with 13 others, at present in British ships, they are to form tho nucleus of the Egyptian Navy and mercantile marine. A>l their lathers have Held high military rank, two being Brigadier-Generals in the Egyptian Army.
‘ The five cadets are M- eboulsri, A. Badr, A- Sjartvnt, R. Rafess, and Y. fiainmad. ilaving .served in the train-ing-ship Worcester, and in the Portsmouth naval barracks and qualified as sub-lieutenants, tji.ey are getting csperiepco of merchant service. They have to get their second mates’ tickets before they go hack to Egypt. When they were in England they went on hoard the Worcester again for an inspection by King Fmul of Egypt, on whoso yacht some of them wHI servo as officers.

All- Guide and his son Norman have now he 14 two-way communications from their homo with the following countries: prance, Finland, Portugal, Geiniany, Holland, Japan, China, IndoChina, Sudan, Canada, United States, Jamaica, Costa Rica, Alaska, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Honolulu, Australia, New Hebrides, and the Ellice Islands. Signej cards confirming these communicaions have already been received from nearly all the above-mentioned countries. DAYLIGHT OPERATORS. AUCKLAND, Sept. 17. Several small burglaries have occurred in Auckland recently. Two ol them appear to have beep done in daylight. Last evening thieves broke into the chemist shop of Charles E. Moir, Dominion road, and stole several small articles, including perfume, powder puffs, and soap. The hrepk was made before midnight.
A tjM'ing break was made at the Presbyterian Orphanage, Mount Smart road, Oneliunga, yesterday. During the lunch hour some of the rooms were entered and ransacked while the occupants were having their meal. Small articles wore taken. The thief must have worked quietly as no one was seen to enter or leave the building.
On Thursday another daylight break was made in a lint in St. Stephen’s Avenue, Parnell. The occupier. Mi’s C'. Forgie, heard a noise in one of the bedrooms. She investigated and saw a man dasli out of the bouse and make away across a vacant section. A sum of 10s was afterwards found to he missing.
SCOW DISMASTED. j AUCKLAND, Sept. 19. j Whije en route from Auckland to ( Awamii oil Saturday, the scow “Moa,” j owned by the Leylnnd O’Brien Timber j Coy., was damaged in a severe north-! east gale, and lost her foremast. She | managed to reach anchorage midway j between Houliora and Awanui, and on Sunday was seen by the Northern Coy’s \ steamer Apanui, which towed her to Awanui Heads. If the weather is fine to-morrow, a start will be made to tow the Moa to Auckland. I BOOT MANUFACTURERS. j CHRISTCHURCH. Sept. 19. J The Christchurch members of the New Zealand Boot Manufacturers’ Association have passed the following resolution: — ' “ That' the executive be urged to make tlie strongest possible protest against the Tariff proposal of the Government-, pointing out t-hat the state of industry during the past- two years makes 1 it imperative that' the tariff on boots be reviewed, otherwise the industry is in danger of extinction.” The statement continues: “That members of the Association have maintained staffs fpr months at a loss, expecting re'lief, bpt must now put them off.”' The suggestion is offered tlmt the Executive organise' a monster deputation to members of Parliament.”
MURDER 'CHARGE. WHANGAREI, Sept. 19. Paul Lendich, a Dalmatian, aged 45 years, was charged in the Kaitaia Police Court on Saturday, before Mr L. Mclntosh, J.P., with the wilful murder of an infant child, of which it is alleged he is the father, the mother being a Maori, named Rosie To Wham, a nineteen-year-old Maori girl, who • was living with accused. The girl gave birth to a male child on the floor of their wliaro on August 23rd, and the information is that, after giving it a drink, sho laid the baby on the bed. where it cried. Lendich is then alleged to have said: “I’m taking it away He left the place with the infant, and nothing more has been scon of it. A remand till Saturday next was granted, the accused being detained in custody in the meantime. The police arc searching the swamp nearby in an endeavour to recover the body of the infant.
FALSE PRETENCES. WELLINGTON. Sept, 19. Eight charges of obtaining money by false pretences were admitted to-day by Douglus Vernon Denney, aged 20. The police stated that accused had been employed by the Aerograph Studios in June. While in Napier he terminated the engagement, but went on collecting money on the firm’s behalf. Ho was at present serving two months for false pretences and a month for broach of probation following a conviction for theft at the beginning of the year. • He now will serve another three months at the end of his present term.
