EXCELSIOR. A. v. RIMTL The above match took place on Saturday afternoon and resulted in n drew G points (two tries) each. In tho first spell Excelsiors had tho best of the play but towards the end of the second spell Rinui evened things up, a try being scored as the hell for time was sounded. The game throughout was of a hard nature, several players on both sides at times playing the man instead of the ball. Both teams missed great opportunities of adding to their score by goal-kicking which was lamentably weak, easy kicks in front of the goal being missed. For Excelsiors tries were secured by Dale and Butland and for Riinu Comport and Growcott scored. Mr E. Heenan was refenee.

NEWMAN SHIELD MATCH. On Thursday last the Greymouth Technical School football team visited Westport to contest the final round of the Newman Shield competition. Grey won by 9—G. UNITED v. MAGPIES. The contest between United and Magpies at Victoria Park on Saturday resulted in a win for the home team By 13 points to 12. WELLINGTON v. MARLBOROUGH. {By Telegraph—Per Press Association. , WELLINGTON, Sept., 18. AVellington beat Marlborough yesterday at Athletic Park in. the presence of 9000 spectators by 32 points to 20. WARATAHS WIN. LONDON, Sept. 17. In the Rugby football match at Devonport, the Waratahs (New South Wales) team defeated Devon and Cornwall by 30 to 3.

Tho Waratahs gave a bright and inspiring display. They took some time to settle down to handling the ball in the early stages, leaving a lot to be desired, hut the longer the game lasted the better tho whole side played. The forwards heeled smartly, and were fast in the loose, while the halves were continually setting in motion wellconducted attacks, completely outclassing their opponents.

COAST-BULLER VICTORY. WESTPORT, Sept, 17

The trial match, Buller and West Coast versus Nelson, Golden Bay and Motueka, was played on Victoria Square this afternoon in beautiful weather, in the presence of a large gathering of spectators. The game at times was of a ragged order, but it was strenuous, and some effective passing runs were made by the backs, the Nelson copnhination (blue) showing up better than that of the Const. The latter won scoring 20 points to 15. Snodgrass, who was injured in last Saturday’s match, was not able to play, but it is understood that he will

be given consideration in one of the other trials.

McNeight was the outstanding forward on tho field, and lie maintained his reputation as a sterling player. Freitas, Tunnicliffe, J. Stuart (forwards) and P. Jamieson, Sherlock, McCleary (backs) were the best of the other Buller-Coast playercT, while on the Nelson side Reed, Wallace and Mahoney, of the backs, showed outstanding brilliancy. E. Snow, Young and Clarke were the -pick of the forwards. Mr Empson (Christchurch) ably controlled the game as referee. WANGANUI BEAT TARANAKI. HAWERA, Sept. 17. Glorious weather and dry, springy ground, provided ideal conditions for an open display pf Rugby this afternoon, when the Wanganui reps defeated Taranaki by 14 points to 12. A sensational incident marked the first spell. Leo Bourke, the Taranaki three-quarter, whose appearance in tlie All Black trials has been regarded as a certainty, sustained a broken leg when he crashed in a hard tackle by his vis-a-vis, Jones. A few moments previously Bourke had scored.

CANTERBURY DEFEATED BY OTAGO. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 17. Canterbury reps, weakened by the absence from tho side of McGregor, Lilburne, Scrimshaw and White, were beaten by the Otago touring team today by 13 points (three tries, two of them converted) to 6 points (two tries). Otago had a definite superiority in the inside backs, and Stewart’s pace on the wing was useful. Otago’s tries were scored by Marslin, Stewart and Mitchell, and Canterbury’s by Dalley and Steel. There were flashes of brilliance on both sides in the match, hut there were also long periods of play below inter-provincial standard. AUCKLAND v. WELLINGTON AUCKLAND, Sept. 17. Tho Auckland Rugby team have maintained an unbeaten record by defeating Wellington by 21 points to 3. Heavy rain made the ground into a quagniiro in places, and rain fell all through. Playing with the wind in the first spell, Wellington had the better of tho exchanges. At half time the score was three all. In the second spell Auckland dominated the game, and a commanding lead was established. Tlie scorers for Auckland were: Hook 2 tries, Batty and Knight ono each. Berridge converted 3 tries and kicked a penalty goal. Oliver scored Wellington’s only try. The attendance was ten thousand.

ASHBURTON, Sept. 17. •Canterbury Senior B. team defeated Ashburton County by 19 to 3 in a fast match to-day. SOUTH' CANTERBURY v. OTAGO. TIMARU. Sept. 17. South Canterbury met an Otago team hero to-day, the former winning by 25 to 23. BRITISH RUGBY TEAM. RUGBY, Sept. 14. Members of the British Rugby lootball team, which lias been touring tho Argentine, arrived at Southampton today. The manager of tlie team said that they had had a wonderful time, and had won every match they had played. The total number of points gained was 295 and the. team only lost 9 points. He added that Argentine teams played very well, particularly their forwards, but were crude behind.
