RAGLAN BY-ELECTION

ADDRESS BY MR ALLAN. PUKEKOHE, Sept. 7. The first public address in the Raglan by-election campaign -was given last night in tlie Buckland Hall, -where about 80 people assembled to hear Mr E. Allan, of Buckland, a -Reform candidate.

After his address, in which he spoke chiefly of land settlement, Mr Allan was asked whether ho intended definitely to go to the poll or whether he would submit his name -to the Reform Selection Conference for the electorate, and abide by its ■selection -of-a candidate to officially .represent ‘Reform, Mr Allan replied that he had toi'd the Reform organiser that day, after a long discussion, that he would refuse to bind himself to anything at all. If the men who had requested him to stand met together and recommended him to hand in his name to the Selection Committee he would do so, but meanwhile he was perfectly free and independent. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr Allan.

MB LEE MARTIN FOR LABOUR. HAMILTON, Sept. 7. Mr Mervyn Wells, of Cambridge, has added his name to those from whom selection will be made by the Reform Party at a meeting at Tuakau on Saturday. Mr S. C. G. Lye lias announced that owing to pressure of private affairs he lias definitely decided not to be a candidate. Mr IV. Lee Martin, of Matangi, has been selected by the Labour party to contest the seat. Mr Martin is a prominent farmer and is president of the Waikato Farmers’ Union. For many years he has been a member of the Labour party, and lie was a candidate at the last general election against the Hon. J. A. Young, for the Hamilton seat.

MR. T. PARKER, OF RAGLAN. RAGLAN, Sept. 7. Mr Thomas Parker (Raglan) who is selected by Mr Veitcli as the Liberal candidate for the Raglan seat at the by-election, lias occupied the position of chairman of the Raglan Town Board for the past ten years and for several years was a member of the Raglan County Council. He was a director of the Raglan Co-operative Dairy Co. for about five years and was for some time a chairman of the Ngaruawahia Town Board. For the past ten years he has been engaged in sheep and dairy farming in the district, and requests have been received from all parts of the electorate that lie become a candidate.

FOUR CANDIDATES. AUCKLAND, Sept. 11. There now are four candidates de finitely announced for the Raglan seat They are: Mi- A. H. Waring (Government). Mr IV. L. Martin (Labour). Mr T. Parker (Liberal). Mr E. Piggott (Independent Labour)
