THE ROAD RACE
NOItWOOD’S WIN. (Australian & N/Z. "Cable A ssociation.) CHRISTCHURCH. Sept. 10. One hundred and three riders started from Timaru yesterday morning on the long road ride to Christchurch. The roads were good, hut on the early part of tlie journey greasy patches gave the riders a spattering of mud. On Friday evening rain fell, lmt the morning broke bright, the rain having cleared and the race started under ideal conditions. Of the 110 entrants, 303 faced the starter in the presence of two thousand spectators. The first batch of thirteen got off punctually at 9.10, the second of seven at 9.15, and the third of four at 9.16.
A light north-easterly breeze was blowing against- the riders. There were few falls, but a fair number of punctures. The winner proved, by a. narrow margin, to be A. A. Norwood, of Papa mi i, Christchurch. Ho started off the 16 minutes mark. Tie had a puncturo at Temukn, and lost six minutes, but he joined the 10 minute handicap bunch, and led them along.
At the finish, nine men entered the show ground together, and there- was a desperate sprint over the track for the finishing line. This ended in Norwood gaining a lead by half a length. Hill, off the 10 minutes mark, viz.. 5 hours 08 min, 18 sec.

AMATEUR PACE. ; AUCKLAND, Sept . 11. ; The fifty miles amateur cycling, road race championship of New Zealand was decided yesterday afternoon.A feature of the race was the success'of the Auckland riders, who filled the! first =ix places and secured rthc-fastest: and second fastest time. He j s n promising rider, and is only 16V rears old. e'e Galbraith, who won second fastest time, was on the same mark as Wade, finishing 22 seconds after him The scratch division did not meet with success, MoFedries and Carswell, both of Wellington being the only two to .finish. Lukov (Canterbury) punctured twice. M. P. Pyrnes (Auckland) retired with cramp ; while tt. J Alorris .(Wellington.) and L Ericsson (WanganuiJ'nratiaki) met with mishaps, which mecpSsitatea -hospital treatment.
