GANC OF MEN SACKED. CAR'I KRTON, Sept. 12. ' Unemployed men at Uimutaka Hill, engaged in widening the road between tbe loot of tho hill anil Featherston, have all been sacked, with the exception ol three. Joseph Robertslnter and Harley William Dear, whose ages were given as sixteen, who were caught after a long cliase on Saturday night pleaded guilty this morning to having converted a ear valued at £212 to their own use. Other charges of a similar nature were stated to tie pending against the accused. Mr Cutten, S.M. refused a request for the suppression of their names, but granted bail of £SO each on remand.

SUSPICIOUS FIRE. AUCKLAND. Sept. 12. When the City Brigade had extinguished a fire on Sundav alteruoon at the premises of J. MaeKeney, saddler, corner of Wyndliam and Albert Streets, it was found to have commenced in three distinct places. The owner states the fire was probably due to spontaneous combustion.
