THE QUEENSLAND STRIKE

STRIKE NOT TO SPREAD. LATEST UNION DECISION. (Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.) BRISBANE, Sept. 8. The Secretary of the Combined Unions Committee to-day announced that the Disputes Committee have v.uauimuosiy determined that the strike should not spread to any other unions. PCSSiDLE SETTLEMENT. BRISBANE, Sept. 8. The South Johnstone strikers have decided that, provided aIV the “ free ” labour is dismissed, they will be agreeable to resuming work on the Arbitration Court's terms.

If this provision is approved by the other parties to the dispute, and the •strikers return to work, the railway trouble will almost automatically end.

THE MOTOR SERVICES. BRISBANE,, Sept. 8. So far the operation of the motor transport has been so successful that the railway service will be permanently affected. END OF STRIKE. LIKELY THIS WEEK BRISBANE, Sept. 8. it is unofficially stated that the Australian Federation of Locomotive Kngiuemeu are bringing pressure to hear to end the dispute, and wii'i insist on the running of trains by the weekend.

If this is so, there are good pro.sn. ets of a settlement of the dispute within forty-eight- hours. Following the advent of motor transport, there are more fruit and vegetables in Brisbane than before the trains stopped, and thero lias been a drop in the prices of both commodities. They had been arriving in better condition than when carried by the railways, and merchants will probably continue using motor transport after the end of the strike.

ft is stated that a fortnight before the strike commenced the Government bad in existence a complete organisation to deal with the situation, and this is now functioning to such an extent that the lack of rail facilities is causing little inconvenience to people travelling to and from the city. VOICE OF LONDON CAPITAL. LONDON. Sept. 8. The “ Times ” in a leading article says:—“ The resuVt of the Queensland strike will be watched with great interest by the Empire’s self-govern-ing nation. The Premier, Mr McCormack's speeches and actions show that bo grasped the real nature and the inevitable effects of such a challenge to the state and the community. A Labour Government like any other Government cannot with safety to itself or to the root principles of constitutional government by democracy, suffer trade unions to usurp its functions. It would also bo fatal to unionism. It took courage for their Labour Premier to preach the doctrine of Parliament’s paramountry to his followers, as he did to the QueenslYind assembly. Tt IS the same doctrine as that on which Air Baldwin defeated the British general strike, and on which the Trades Union Act is founded.”
