SWIMMING.
CHANNEL SWIM FAILS. (Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.) London, Sept. o. Mrs Corson abandoned ;t splendid attempt to swim the Channel from Dover when four miles from Cape Grisnez, France after nearly nine hours and forty minutes in Hie. water. Slitwars taken from the water at 6.3 G p.m. She was shivering and exhausted, having been beaten by the cold. She started under most favourable conditions. She was twice attacked by sickness, but recovered after which she made splendid progress, despite u freshening breeze which roughened tho sea. Later the temperature droplied suddenly. Mrs Corson complained of the cold and she began to cry. Her pilot and trainer, with the French coast well in sight, decided that it would he useless for her to carry on. It was a hitter defeat, as she had previously swum tre Channel in the. opposite direction.
