MENTAL HOSPITAL
FIRE BRIGADE COMPETITIONS,
A very interesting event took place at the Mental Hospital grounds on Saturday afternoon when the Mental Hospital Fire Brigade held their first competition between the members ot the Mental Hospital Brigade. There were fourteen entries for the one-man coupling event (dry) and eight lor tho two-men coupling (wet), 'lho results were as follows:
One man coupling event (dry), hose to he laid out, uncoupled, man to stand five yards behind stand pipe, run and connect 109 feet ol hose to standpipe, then couple two 50ft lengths, and put on branch, time to ho taken when branch was put on. Run under F.B.A. rules. Warder Freitas 31sec (lsec penalty) 32sec. 1; Warder Oliver 41sec; Warder Thomas 42secs. Also competed: Warders Lincoln-42 l-ssec, Carter 43 3-ssec, Askew 44scc, Johnson 48sec, Lanini 48 3-ssec, Shannon 49sec, Nightingale oOsee, Kirwan 50 3-ssec, Wright Oosec, Doyle 67sec, Hannrahan 84sec. Two men coupling handicap event, (wet). Men to start 5 yards behind stand pipe, pick up hose, run out 100 feet and couple to stand pipe, then run out 250 f- length of hose, fix branch and strike disc. All hose to he coiled up and placed by stand pipe. Time to he taken when water strikes the disc.:— Oliver and Lanini (14 3-nsec (handicap 3?iscc-), 61 l-osce 1; Freitas and Lincoln 66see (2Vsee), 63.|sec 2 ; Thomas and Shannon 71sec (2:Jsee), 68.',see 3. Also competed: Doyle and Wright 75sec (sfsee), CDJsee, Carter and Fleming 91 3-ssec (Msec), 87see, Kirwan and Lang 9()sec <2sec), 88see.
Superintendent Braddon of the Hokitika Brigade acted as timekeeper and ex-Deputy-Snperintendent Davidson as starter and judge. In presenting the prizes to the winners Mr Davidson expressed his surprise and pleasure in the smart work performed in both events, and he ielt sure that should their services he required they would give a good account ol themselves in coping with an outbreak of fire. Superintendent Braddon said ho had much pleasure in endorsing the remarks of Mr Davidson saying lie was pleased with the way the men finished their work and he hoped at some luture date to sec them in a competition with the local brigade.
