Lake Kanieri continues to increase in popularity of late. Motor boating is a popular pastime with many patrons, while picnic parlies are beginning to visit the lakeside already. Upwards of forty ears of all descriptions were at Lake Kanieri on Sunday afternoon. Visitors had a lovely day for the outing, and many visited the fish hatchery near the Lake.

A grand ball will be liel<T in the Three Mii'e Hall on Wednesday evening in aid o ftlie ball funds. Complete arrangements have been made. The Elsie lias been at Picton for the past two .months getting a new Vickers Potters engine installed. It is expected that this work will he finished in another three weeks. Next week one of the popular Old Time Dances will be hold in the Public Hall. Kokatahi, the proceeds being devoted to the Hall funds. Admission 2s, supper provided. Advt Relatives on the West Const have received news of the death of Mr Thomas Promlergast, at the age of 96 years, at Ballyliooly. Tipperary, Ireland. Mr William Promlergast, of Greymouth and Mrs J. Ryall of Ilairytown are members of deceased’s family, and the late Mrs A. Scanner, who resided n.t C'llxlcn. was also a daughter, while other members of the family reside in tho United States and in Ireland.
The usual weekly dance at St Mary s Club was held last evening, and despite tho rough weather conditions there was a fair attendance of dancers. The arramuonents were carried out in a very lilting manner. Excellent music was supplied and the floor was in firstclass order. On next Monday evening there will be a long night dance, and given line weather a crowded attendance should he the result.

At a meeting of the Trustees of the Hokitika Savings Hank yesterday, tho ■President (Don. H. 1.. Michel) moved a. vote of sympathy to Miss Solomon and relatives in the bereavement suffered recently l.v the death of her father (Air John Solomon) and her uncle (Air .Michael Pollock) in Sydney. The latter had been a member of the Trustee Board for several years, ajml for a. considerable ,pei!iod was President of the Savings Bank Trustees. The motion was adopted unnnirnouslv.

A representative meeting was held at the Soldiers’ Hall last evening relative to the Military Ball to be held on tfie 21st inst. The ball will bo conducted under the auspices of the local military officers and a strong committee, and it is-' intended to make it an outstanding function. Messrs Hutchison and Bell were appointed joint secretaries, and Air C. Bleach placed in charge of the nail decorations and the novelty dances. Mcsilames Parkhill, Morgan and T. Stuart were appointed to direct the commissariat, and several ladies offered their assistance. Charges for admission were fixed as previously, viz.: double ticket Os, extra lady 3s, gent single 4s. In response to a general request it- was decided to hold a jitve. nile dance the following evening at popular prices. It Mas decided to engage Ross’ Orchestra for the ball, and a scheme of decoration was agreed to. It was intimated that the Company colours Mould ho available and would he displayed in Hokitika for the first time. It was agreed to hand over the surplus from the ball to the R..S.A hall fund. From Hie interest and enthusiasm displayed in this social event, it promises to bo a very popular 1 miction this year. Several of the staff officers of the military district with their wives are likely to attend. The ball is set doM-n for to-morrow fortnight, and the juvenile dance the evening following.
