Never has the sun shone more opportunely bright at Arthur’s Pass than on Sunday when 200 excursionists from Christchurch visited the region. With snow enough to delight the most snow-greedly of youngsters, blue skies and scenic panoramas to. make the artist enthuse, and five and a half hours to spend in this mountain paiadise there was every reason for the enraptured praise of the trippers at the end of the day. Unlike most of the previous excursions that ol Sunday was to Arthur’s Pass only but as the train arrived their at 11.-10. a.m. and did not depart till 5.15. p.m., ample time was available for sight-seeing and many walked to Otira and back with time' to spare. The majority however, contented themselves with the tramp to the top of the divide, numbers of them also visiting the Devil’s Punchbowl, where the fall was a magnificent sight. Snow was not deep enough on the lower road to make walking haul in the early stages but increased to a depth of eighteen inches in some of the higher parts of the road and here frequent snow-bailing skirmishes took place. The track to the Healey Glacier also attracted a number of trippers and a party of five young men and one young lady reported reaching within a quarter of a mile of the foot of Mount Rolleston. Their further progress, hbwever was Mocked by tpe depth of the new’snow, which reached to their armpits and made a nearer approach impossible.
