The death of Afrs Catherine Perkins occurred at her residence, Albert Terrace Greymouth oil Saturday morning. She was a native of Alnnehester, 86 years of age, and was one of the oide.st colonists in New Zealand, having arrived at Port Chalmers by the ship Afooltan on Christmas Day 1849. She reached Hokitika in 1860, and Greymouth in 1876, and lias resided there since. Deceased had been in illlicalth for the past 12 months. Her husband (an ex-Alavor of Greymouth) predeceased her last May, and she is survived by three daughters (Airs. S. Perkins. Wymlhnm, and Alisses Ada and Lillian Perkins, at Greymouth) ; also one son (Mr 0. K. Perkins, Greymouth). A London correspondent writes: AUs AY. >S. A Gerald Marcuse broadcast from London, relayed through Sydney, was heard here yesterday afternoon shortly after G o’clock, alien a selection was being played. The reception, however, was not good, but the- possibilities are there. The present are only trials, and Empire broadcasting will soon become a fact. Between 2 and 5 a.m. to-day, 2F.C. Sydney was to attempt an Empire broadcast on short- wave intended primarily for India, South Africa. Canada and Great Britain. Holland and the United Sttcs were also to listen in. Several notabilities were to speak and a liigb class programme was to be sent out by high power. Dame Nellie Melba. was to speak and Joseph Hyslop.
