AUSTRALIAN NEWS.

(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) RAILWAY TROUBLE. SYDNEY, Sept. 1. Following on the receipt of advices from Queensland that the Queensland railways would cease work on Saturday, in sympathy with the dismissed railway workers, the 'New South Wales Railway Commissioners have decided that, from this afternoon, tho departure of all trains to Queensland shall be cancelled until further notice. Unless the dispute is settled within the next few days, the trouble is expected to extend to tlie whole of the Commonwealth. SETTLEMENT EXPECTED. BRISBANE, Sept. 2. The Board of Trade and Arbitration which has intervened in the railway strike, has probably arrived at a settlement of the trouble.

It is now practically certain that tho Australian AA’orkers’ Union will" accept the Board’s proposal that the South Johnstone railway strike be declared off, and that the men shall resume work on the basis of an Australian Workers’ Union proposal made some weeks ago. which proposal was rejector Thy a ballot of the men. Tho combined Railway Unions will probably support the Australian Union in forcing the South Johnstone workers back to work, and if this is accepted, then a railway settlement will result.
