The Arbitration Court granted the New South Wales Newspaper Proprietors Association, consisting of the Sun Newspapers Ltd., tlie Truth and Sportsman Ltd., Smiths Newspapers Ltd., the Sunday Times Ltd., and the Daily Telegraph Newspapers Ltd., registration as an industrial union of employers. The .objects of the Association are stated, intern lia, to promote and safeguard the interests of its members in carrying on the business of newspaper proprietors and to secure for its members the benefits of the Industrial Arbitration Act. SYDNEY CTTY COUNCIL. SYDNEY, Sept. 2. Mr Bavin. Leader of the Nationalist Party, speaking at Willoughby referring to the Government of Sydney by the City Council said the condition of Itbings is one that demands drastic remedies. 'The Nationalists could not permit a. continuance of the state of tilings which made every honest man. hang his head when the name of tlie City Council was mentioned. He stated: “If the Nationalists are returned to power, the city would he placed under a commission as a means of restoring better conditions. STRIKE CONDITIONS. SYDNEY, Sept. 2. Another hundred men are added to those already affected by the stoppage at Hoskins iron and steel works, when the employees at the steel works shaft colliery decided to cease work. 'Their action followed a move by the members of tlie staff to transport coal from tlie colliery to tlie works. The position in regard to the general stoppage is unchanged. Neither company nor men have hitherto made an effort to effect a settlement.
CHTLD ENDOWMENT. SYDNEY, Sept. 2
The first payments under the Child Endowment- Act has been made. The authorities estimate that about 130,(100 payments will be made fortnightly for the next twelve months.
M.P. SALARIES. HOBART. Sept. 2. The Assembly passed a Bill providing for an increase of the salaries of members of the House from £3OO to £370 for Hobart members and for others on a graduated scale according to the distance of their constituencies from [the government ranging from £3OO to £SOO.
RAILWAY SERVICES DISPENSED WITH. BRISBANE, Sept. 2. The Commissioner of Railways has issued instructions stating as it has become impossible to continue operating the railways on the present basis, there is no option but to close down entirely for a- short time. It is necessary therefore to dispense with the services of all employees from noon on Saturday. Employees desirous of reemployment. are invitee! to apply immediately. They will be required to sign an undertaking binding themselves to obey the rules and regulations as they existed before the trouble arose. The General Secretary of the Australian Railways Union has issued a manifesto appealing to all unions for support. WHEAT AREA. PERTH. Sept. 2. The Statistician reports there are under wheat in West Australia 3.112.000 acres, an increase of 433.000 compared with the previous season.
