(Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.) NANKING FALLS. SHANGHAI, Aug. 30. Alarshall Sunehuanfang has ordered a general crossing of the Yangtsze of several columns. Small transports landed many thousands of northerners on the south bank, causing the Southerners to retreat, virtually placing Nanking and Chinkiang in their hands by this evacuation. The position of foreigners in Nanking is made untenable and all have deserted, taking shelter in respective gunboats, which are standing by in case of emergency. JAPANESE ACTION. TOKYO, Aug. 30. The Emperor has sanctioned tbe withdrawal of Japanese troops from Shantung. The Foreign Office has issued a statement that the situation is stabilised at present, but in the event of disturbances in future, Japan will bo constrained to assume an attitude of self defence.
