LATE LOCALS.
A road through the Haast Pass from Otago to Westland has long been the dream of those, who have the expansion and tho progress of Otago at heart says the “Daily Times.” They hold that such a road if constructed would bring the two provinces into closer touch with one another; moreover it would complete a -magnificent round tourist trip which would embrace seme of the most magnificent and varied scenery in the Dominion. Southland lias long been in favour of the scheme, and now comes the news that the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Tourist League also recognises its possibilities and is working for the formation of tho road. At a. recent meeting of tin' Southland Progress League, the proposal was discussed, and a letter was received from the Auckland body intimating that it would support any such move, and urging that- the Southland League make representations in the proper quarter to have a detailed survey of the proposed route made, and an estimate prepared for the cost of the work. The Southland League decided to communicate with the Otago Expansion League, and also to reply to Auckland, expressing its sympathy with the suggestion.
