CHINESE TROUBLE.

NANKING BOXDBARDAIENT. SHANGHAI, August 21).
Owing to an intense bonbardment of Nanking by northern artillery from Pu kow, Nanking is almost completely evacuated by southerners, who have taken up a position behind the city. The northerners staged a second attempt to cross Yangtse river, ten thousand going over covered by a. barrage. They landed at Lungban where they were instantly attacked by southerners and compelled to retire, owing to tho unexpected np|>onrane« in the vicinity of two southern warships which commenced bombarding them during the landing. The roar of cannon was constantly heard in Nanking, tho inhabitants of which are in a state of panic Shells are falling indiscriminately wrecking many homes. Northerners are still unable to obtain proper means of transportation in order to cross the Yangtse, and ntNanking in full .strength.

(Australian A N.Z. Cable Association.) MISSING AII!.MAN. (Received this day at 10.15 a.m.) NEW YORK, Aug. 20. Anxiety regarding the fate of Redfern is now greatly increased, though his wife and several close friends still* refuse to believe a disaster lias overtaken the airmen. Expert fliers, however, are inclined to believe lie struck the storm soon after leaving land and was probably forced down into the sea. Hope was revived slightly when word came that a plane had been seen in Venezuela, but no confirmation lias been received.
SACCO'S ASHES. NEW YORK, Aug
Joe Lnngone, a Boston undertaker, obtained the ashes of Sacco and Vanzetti from the crematorium and locked them in his safe. He declared ho would not release them till his hill of seven hundred dollars was paid. It had been planned to transfer the ashes to New York to-day, hut the project had to he abandoned.
