Poi.mc.u, events in Ireland continue in tbc> sensational vein. The Premier (Mr Cosgrave) is busy putting up precedents. There is no desire on his part to hang on. to office unless he. is assured of a. majority. His whole demeanour has been open and above board, and be is proving finite a strong man in the period of crisis. Now, although he has won the two live-elections, securing his Government without the aid of the invaluable Mr Jinks., he lia.s determined to go to the country as a whole, and seek a new composite verdict from the nation. Doubtless the results of the live-elec-tion have encouraged him. in that line of action, hut still he is taking obvious risks. At the same time, it is dear from his manifesto lie is doing the best for his countrymen as a whole. I reland needs sober responsible Godernmoiit. and under a leader .such as Mr Cosgrave that desirability is in sight. Mr do Valera is in open revolt against the constitution, the Labour leader is quite inexperienced, while Air Redmond lia.s proved 100 willing to trim his sails to every possible breeze which blew. Air Cosgrave has given cogent reasons for securing a stable government at tills juncture, one which should not have to bargain, for its existence, or the policy of which should be dictated by any compromise proceedings. There is a clear cut issue for the nation, and now that- all the late excitement has relieved the pent up feelings of the people, they should judge the clearer what is best for their own destiny. They have the freedom to vote for their own political future, and in that license they have home rule as a reality. It is evident Air Cosgrave is a capable leader. He has the facility for seizing opportunities and looking to the. state of affairs in Southern Ireland just now. he proposes to pursue a line of policy which puts on the people themselves the onus of determining the future polities of the country. Nothing could he fairer or more democratic.
