LINER. HITS TCEBERG. LONDON*. July 11. (When the 'Canadian Pacific liner Montcalm (16.418 tons) reached Greenock yesterday with nearly 1.100 passengers a graphic story was told of her adventure with an iceberg in the Strait of Bello Isle (at the mouth of the Gulf of St. Lawrence) on July 3rd. She was two days out from Montreal. when, in a dense fog, there suddenly loomed up cm the starboard side a huge iceberg which towered high above the funnels of the vessel. A crunching sound was heard and the Montcalm took a heavy list to port. She had some way on, and passengers distinctly felt her slide along a submerged ledge of the iceberg and eventually right hers.eli on getting clear. Altogether the vessel was held up 44 hours in the fog and icefield. The mishap occurred at about 2.30 in the afternoon, when the decks were crowded with passengers. Considerable excitement prevailed and this was accentuated when orders were given for the lifeboats to be swung out and the ship's crew posted at their stations. There were excited (lies from women and children, and several fainted. Examination showed that, while a propeller blade appeared to have suffered and that some paint had been scraped off the bilge keel, the vessel was undamaged. Assurances were given that the vessel was in no danger and the excitement quickly subsided. ‘*l shall remember that cTimoning sound to my dying day.'’ said a wo- 1 man passenger to a reporter. One man who was on deck said that the vessel was so near to the iceberg that he could have put out his hand and touched ft.
