TUESDAY’S PROCEEDINGS. AFTERNOON SESSION (Continued.) Choral Singing. The Judge (Mr Alossi remarked he was very pleased with the exhibition and was sorry tho winners could not go to Greyinoutli. Convent A. 138; Convent I! girls, BIG; Woodstock School, commended. Air Aloss thanked the officials for the treatment extended during the competitions, and said he had enjoyed every minute of the time spent with them. It was very gratifying to see the Competitions such a success from every point of view. lie wished the Hokitika competitors success at the Greymouth competitions next week. Sacred Solo, open, own selection, eight competed. Recalls. Miss Borton, Airs Turnbull, Aliss Sherrill' and Airs Eindi’ay. The main competition was one of the best of Hie season, the variety of songs adding to the public interest; hut the judge was not too satisfied. excepting in the recalls, when all improved their marks. Result: Aliss Borton 75, Miss Snerriff and Airs Turnhull 73 each, Airs Findlay commended. Recitation in character, 15 to 18 years, own selection. One entry, Daisy Marshall, who gave a fair rendition, and a second award Mats made.

Vocal duet. open, own .selection, four entries. The winners had a good blend, said the judge, and ho awarded first prize to Misses Morris and Morgan, 73; Miss Ward and Mrs Findlay, 71; Misses Knight and Burton, 70. Open Recitation, second section, seven competed. Allan Coles, 77; N. Worniington, 70 ; Joy AVaril and D. Stephens each 74, tied. J. Rutland very highly commended for her Shakespearean effort, also Jean Dowell, P. McGavin for their work.

Humorous recitation, under 12 years, two competed. Air Bush saul there were two quite good performances. The business was well brought out. .Joy AA’ard 73, Af. McGavin 70. Afusicnl Alonologue, under 12 years, five competed. Sylvia Sanders 78, Joy AA'ard 77, A. Coles 70. The judge praised the work also of A'iolet Ross, AY. Saunders. AT. AL'Caviii. Recitation in character, 12 to 15 years, two competed. Noeieen AA’ormington and Dorothy Hughes equal first. Air Bush addressed the competitors briefly, and gave them several points about appearance and action in elocution work. He advised facial expression as a special aid, instancing Joan Baker’s work in the oration. He suggested improved articulation and special care in that direction. They should watch their diction and keep the language pure without artifice. Pausation should he practised” with effect. In poetry and blank verse, they should watch the rythm, and accent properly. Always be yourself was worth while—lre natural, said Air Bush in conclusion. Hearty cheers were given for the judges and the Competitions closed just before f> o’clock with the hearty singing of tlie National Anthem.
