The death occurred on Sunday of Mi's Tipping .wife {if Mr G. A. Tipping, of “Rostrevor,” Bluff, and only sister of Sir .Joseph Ward, of Horetaunga, Wellington. The late Mrs 'tipping, who was TO years of ago, had enjoyed excellent health until some few days ago, when she suffered it paralytic stroke, from the effects of which she passed quietly away.
In order to overcome unemployment among teachers the Education Department has in recent years limited the number of entrants to the profession, last year's number being reduced to 400. The number of probationers required to make up the leeway has now been determined by the Department, which has authorised education boards to appoint 600 probationers next year.
The Eire. Brigade at Reef ton had a busy week-end, there being four outbreaks. The first occurred at 9.15 on iSunday night, when a fourth—apparently incendiary—effort was made to destroy an unoccupied two-storey building owned by the Harris family. The flames had a strong hold and the building is now fit only for demolition. Repairs were in progress, and the builder, Air A. Wells, lost a quantity of uninsured timber. The second outbreak occurred at midnight, when Mr E. Downey’s fruit and sweets simp was destroyed, with the whole of the stock and fittings. The third outbreak, at 2 a.in. on Monday, was aj>parently an incendiary attempt to destroy an empty liou.se owned by the Coonihe family. The damage was confined to the kitchen. The fourth outbreak at 8.20 a.m., was caused by hot coals igniting wood stacked near an oven in Conway’s bakehouse. The roof was damaged, hut the brigade prevented the flames from spreading.

An Auckland telegram records the death thcic yesterday of Arthur Langdoti Parsons, aged 02. Secretary to the New Zealand Insurance Coy. The deceased for several years, when stationed at Christchurch, was one of the representatives of the Underwriters’ Association on the Hokitika Fire Board

AA'ith respect to the application lodged for a prospecting license for coal in the Bouchers Gully district, near Lake Kanien, it is understood the pi' l ncinals have located a live feet scam of coal which it is proposed to prospect and if sufficient inducement offers to develop same. The outcrop is said to fie good household coal and being so close to Hokitika should find a ready market. The discovery is considered to he of considerable commercial vnfuc.
Infectious and other notifiable diseases repo rtcil in the Canterbury and West Coast Health districts during thi' week ended noon on Holiday totalled 22 as follows— Canterbury : Scarlet fever 0, diphtheria. 1. tuberculosis 3, pneumonia. 5. pneumonic influenza 2, puerperal sepsis 2. West Coast: Diphtheria 1, tuberculosis 1, .pneumonia 1. There was one death in the Canterbury district from pneumonic influenza.
Alt order has been placed by the Mines Department for an arc coal cutter and electric boring machine for use at the James State colliery. The coal in the James colliery is harder than that won from most of the State mines in the Dominion, and it is expected -that the result to be obtained l>y holding and boring the coal mechanically will he an increased output of larger coal. The machines may .also enable the miners to earn increased wages. The conditions of the order require the plant to 'he delivered within foui months.
