Practically every avenue, of escape lor Sacco and Vanzetti was closed when Justice Stone denied the. petition for the State of the sentence, after the defence counsel hud made a. desperate haste to reach him at his summer home. Chief Justice Taft is now vacationing in Canada and it is intimated over the telephone that he refused to come to the border, and that he lacks jurisdiction in Canada. These two refusals coupled with those of Justices Brandeis and Holmes ended the defence counsel's hope of gaining a stay from anyone of the four available justices of the Supreme Court. Attemnts are still made to obtain an intervention of Governor Fuller, who is now the last resort, but nothing is expected to lie gained thereby.
EXECUTION PR ERA RATIONS. NEW YORK. Aug. 22.
All preparations for the execution are now completed. Both Sacco and Vanzetti are reported to lie in better spirits than for some time past and apparently have given up all hope of a reprieve, and are resigned to death.
Sacco’s wife anil \ anzetti’s sifter are expected to pay their final visits later in the day.
Extraordinary precautions have been taken to quell anything in the nature of an outbreak. Machine guns, tear and gas bombs, riot guns, bigii pressure hose and other weapons, are in readiness and nearly 500 men including 100 members of the State constabulary assigned to guard the prison will remain on duty until after the executions. The public will be kept a considerable distance from the prison. Police reserves have, (been mustered.
