Chinese troops continue firing on Yangt.se shipping and British warships are replying in every case. The Hankow Government decided to remove headquarters to Nanking where troops are being moved with the object of opposing the Northern menace. Bombarding at it long range continues and crossing the Yangtse appears imminent. A Japanese naval force has lauded ut Chinkiang.

ATTACK ON NANKING. SHANGHAI, Aug. 23. One section of Nanking Anny is rctrea.ting along the Grand Canal towards Chekiang. The others are being rushed to Nanking to stiffen the defences there, but the end is foreseen. The bombardment of Nanking continues intermittently and the city populace are panic stricken. 'Die Military Governor of Shanghai, responsible for the suppression of Communists and execution of leaders, was called to Nanking with troops, leaving the native areas at the mercy of labour corps of Communists. Martial law is Ixdng enforced, the police fearing an uprising as a protest against Iho recent beheadings.

NATIONALIST COLLAPSE EXPECTED. SHANGHAI. Aug. 22,

'Hie complete collapse of the Nationalists is expected unless Wuhan forces can reach Nanking to strengthen the lines before Sun Oman Fang launches his drive across the river to capture the city.
