There were a number of the public present, at the outset, anil as the morning proceeded the million e grew, at ! t o’clock a very fair number being present. Piano solo, ‘J to 111 years, ‘‘Happy Summer Days” (Blake); fourteen comjietitors. This proved a. very good section, and the judge being unable to .separate the better ptuTonnanees, <loeided to recall Dorothy Sloplorlh, Edna Bilker, Jessie. Mclntosh, Valerio Nightingale, Dorothy Inwood. 'I ho Judge said it was a very fair section.
Recitation, 9 to 12 years, “Mho’s Who.” ,second section; eleven competitors. Tu this section there was another good competition, resulting in the following recalls to c impctc with the first section winners to-morrow afternoon: Oira Lynn. Joy AVard. Olga Baker. The Judge said the section was an interesting one. Mr Bush .said he was pleased to note all through the Competitions in Hokitika that the vowel sounds were given their full value. The direction was even better than the previous year when he also had occasion to comment favorably. It was a credit to the teachers. If anything was wrong it was tho inclination to over emphasise or emphasise the wrong words. Piano duel (open) “Prelude” CRnehimaiiiiiolT); three competitors: 0. and R. Jacobs 83, AT. Piget and M. Houlahan 73. The winners gave a very good performance and he had given the highest marks yet obtained. Girls’ Song. 9 to 12 years, “Lovers’ Wish” or “Just a Cottage Small”; five competitors : Cora Lynn 74. Dorothy Stopforth and Margaret Gillooly CO each. This was somewhat disappointing on the whole, hut the winner was on fata tiding. Violin solo. 12 to 15 years, “Mcniiett in G.” (Bethovon); throe competitors; Jean Dowell (59, Cyril Schroder (57. The second played rather jerkily. His tempo was rather fast.
afternoon SESSION. Recitation in character. 9 to 12 year, own selection, six competitors. This proved one of tho particularly delightful sections of the Competition. All the competitors did distinctly well in their pieces, for some of which there were effective stage settings. The large attendance present enjoyed each succ.ssivc presentation, and all tho performers were applauded heartily. The recalls wore: Pat AfcGavin (tramp), Joy AVard (butterfly), Cora Lynn (Peter Pan).
Instrumental' Trio, open, own selection. Four competitors.—This was a very pleasing number, all the performers, including a violin trio front Ross, acquitting themselves with ability. A Lynn, R. and G. Jacobs. 75, first; AL Paget, E. Carroll. AL Houlahan, 74, second; F. Houlahan, P. Crough, J. Ackers, f!7, third.
The Competitions were continued throughout Saturday most successfully. The interest of the public was evidenced from the opening of the doors. The day passed off very pleasantly. There was a very long programme to dispose of morning, afternoon and night but strict punctuality was observed, and the end came very shortly after 11 o’clock.
