MAYOR RESIGNS.
AUCKLAND. Aug. 18. Tilt' Avondale Borougli Council met yesterday evening, but before adopting the usual procedure of declaring the meeting open and moving the confirmation of the minutes, the M nyor (Mr H. Tiarks) announced that he was not there to transact any business. The time had arrived when there should be a parting of the ways. The poll of the electors taken last Saturday, when amalgamation with the city was carried by such an overwhelming inafority. was a vote of no-confidence in the Mayor and Council, and tliat they could no longer satisfactorily ndministei the affairs of the borough. He could not retain the Mayoral chair, and his self-respect at the same time. Therefore, lie would tender his resignation forthwith. Cr. J. Y. Ttiesterer also announced his intention of tendering his resignation. Crs. A. Edmiston and TV. Pendlebury also handed in their resignations. Commenting editorially, the “ Herald ” says: “ The Mayor’s action is more childish than dignified.”
