BABY GIRL FOUND TN SEPTfC TANK. WELLINGTON, August 17. On Monday afternoon last tho intake pi]>o of a septic tank at Lower Hutt became blocked. Investigation by the Engineer disclosed the fact that the blockage was caused by a female baby, which doctors declare to have been still horn 'lnc Magistrate, at an inquest, held to-day, found that the body was that of a stillborn child horn a few days prior to August 15th., and that there was no evidence to show how the body came into the tank.

Following on the decision of tho Avondale ratepayers to amalgamate with the city, the Mayor and three councillors of the borough resigned last evening. Avondale now is without a mayor and has six councillors instead of nine. Two others have been unable to attend the meetings for some time and business may be delayed until elections, to fii'l the four vacancies. The amalgamation takes place on .March 31st.

THEFT OF BOOK'SAUCKLAND, Aug. 18. Yesterday a fine of £6 was imposed on a former Auckland solicitor, James Lockwood Bradv, on a charge of stealing four books from the Public Library.
