WELLINGTON CLUBS

WELLINGTON. Aug. 10

Wellington has at present ten senior clubs playing cricket, the number of which many good judges think is excessive, as there are nothing like 110 players really worthy of senior rank. Years ago district clubs were tried, but the objections gradually grew till they were abandoned, and under tlie free trade system, extra clubs were foimed till they have become unwiei'dly in number. Various schemes Were proposed to meet the difficulty, to all of which more or less hostility was shown.

One of them, to reduce the list to six b.v amalgamation, c-anie before the association last night, hut the opposition of vested interests was too strong and it was thrown out. Opponents frankly averred that they did not care about the interests of the game as a whole, and preferred those of their own pet clubs. ENGLISH COACH CHOSEN. NEW PLYMOUTH, Aug. 10. A prominent English cricketer, A. A Wilson, of Yorkshire, has been chosen as coach for the Northern Division of the Taranaki Cricket Association for next season, and will arrive in September. Wilson is 4 7 years of age, and comes of a great cricketing family, with a good record in the Yorkshire Ci'tlb since the war. He has played League eiicket, in which he has topped the batting averages. LARWOOD’S INJURY. (Received this day at S a.m.) LONDON, Jug. 16. Larwood is unlikely to p’ay again tin’s season. He broke dawn after bowling nine overs at Trentbndge. It appears he strained and inured Ills knee when batting and the bowling aggravated the trouble.
