The Westland County Council had the unusual experience of being complimented bv ratepayers in four different centres on the manner in which various works had been attended to. The Chairman said it was most, unusual to receive praise, however much it was desired, and the occasion was worthy of note.
The monthly meeting of the AYestidnd County Council was put though with commendable despatch yesterday, the business occupying a little less than two hours.' The usual quantity of business appeared to he on hand, hut with three members absent there was decreased loquacity, while there "as nothing of a very contentious nature before the meeting.
At the ineeting of the County Council there .was a. .short- discussion regarding casual employment, two workmen having complained of being put oft in .order that farmers might he put mi. The Overseer’s explanation was accepted in its entirety. The Chairman said if .they wanted the Overseer to .give them, the best results for tho expenditure incurred, it should ho left entirely to the Overseer, whom he would employ. The farmers’ excursion from Blenheim to Christchurch this week was something of a fiasco, only eleven farmers in all making the through trip. The organiser, Air Pawson, who had made the usual complete arrangements, was greatly disappointed.
The wholesale price of eggs in Christchurch last week was Is Oil a dozen for first grade hen eggs and Is 5d for second grade. A merchant, who is closely connected with the trade, intomicd a reporter that- he did not expect that eggs would become any cheaper this season, and that the prices now ruling were down to the “flush” season level.

That the opossum season in Westland has broil a very fair one -is evidenced l>y the fact that i(H)0 skins have been stamped locally, and the season has .still a month to go, while many returns are still to come in. The death of Tliomns Morrell’(known as Tim Brown) took place at the Westport Old People’s Home on Saturday evening. .Deceased, who was unmarried, had been ill ill-health for a long time. There are indications that the local demand for electric, power when I rought in by the Westland Power Ltd. will be considerable. It is expected quite a large amount will be used industrially for both sawmilling ami lliixmilling. And there is no reason why the industries of the district should not expand with the aid of the cheap power. Although the local scheme is only in its infancy it would appear the Company will require to prepare for tv fairly substantial load from the very inception of its works. Power and light are expected to be ready from the first station early in the new year.
When dealing with the report of the Finance Committee yesterday at the County Council meeting, members complimented the Chairman on hi?/ handling of the finances. It was remarked that while endeavouring to obtain more favorable terms with the bankers regarding overdraft rates, steps were Iveing taken also to limit the amount of the overdraft. The Chairman stated they had set out with the intention of conserving fbe funds, anil economising to a.vo'id increasing the rates, and it- was with that in mind lie was seeking to make the year as .successful as ho could in the public interests.
