OVERSEER MILLNER'S MONTHLY REPORT.

NORTHERN RIDING MAINTENANCE.

Repairs were effected by gravelling low s]K)ts and motor worn holes on Arahura Valley, One Mile, and Humphreys Roads, but owing to the difficulty ot procuring suitable material, work was discontinued until a more favourable opportunity occurs. The Roadman attended to repairs to the outlet <>f a loncvete culvert on Mine Spur-Arahura Road also to raking and breaking metal on Arahura Valley. One Milo and Humphreys Roads, (.•leaning wtibertilofes ton Harceurt s Hill and assisting'to dismantle a portion of H nngeriord's Bridge. CENT RAJ. RIDING.

Station Road. The Contractors have completed the clearing, forming ami metalling over the specified distance of 40 chains, .and are now engaged in forming, and metalling a further distiicne of 509 links to absorb the balance remaining from tbe grant. Immediately lids is completed. the tramway used for metal haulage will be removed from the road surlnce and tin- whole of metalling dressed ana finished off in readiness lor the final inspection.

McArthur Road Drainage and Formation. Tho. Contractors have made good progress and have completed the specified lengths of drains, three concrete pipe culverts and a quantity of formation. The balance ot tlu 1 grant will ho expended in < xfi ndiug dm formation westward toward the Hokitika Rivet.

Back Crock Road Metalling ami Widening. This work was put 'n hand, the ruts metalled over hall the distance, widened for six feet in width tor one chain in length and a concrete piper drain constructed at Thorpe’s crnei. Thirty cubic yards of crushed metal are in readiness in the bin at Kanieri and will he curled out to complete repairs as soon as permission is obtained to cross Hokitika River Bridge at Kanieri now under

repairs. MAINTENANCE. Repairs were effected lwitli gravel to worn portions of Lake Kanieri. Lower Kokatirhi. Koiterangi, Upper Cropp’s, Adairs, Arthurstown and South Hokitika. Portions, of Lower Kokatalu, and a short portion of the lower end of Lake Kanieri Road was repaired with crushed metal, well rolled, {blinded with line gravel and re-l-ollcd with the ten ton roller. Repairs to the lower portion of Cropp Road were put in hand, partly graded with the large grader to remove the outer grass before being metalled. This is the first time the lorries have been used in metalling this portion of Cropp*s Road which crosses a swamp nearly one mile ill length, and ill con seqoumo half the load had to be left on the sounder parts at the unper end. and tho lighter weight loads .canned across the sofi portions to fill the ruts and enable the lorries to work toward tbe lower end. This work could only be performed during fine weather, the lorries being diverted to other work in the district during . shower v or wet weather. 10l ill e 11 1. all the gravel used m repairs was carted by lorry and dumped at the intersection of Koiterangi and Cropp s Road, then carted by teams to Ihe I nver end, one mile distant from the gravel dump. The circular turnout at the Golf Links was finally completed and should prove satisfactory, and the metalling of Spoor’s Track completed over a distance of 14 chains in length. Luke Kanieri Road was graded over a. distance of four miles, watertables cleaned and it. culvert repaired on Arthurstown. Road. Dclective decking was renewed on Kukatahi and Duck Creek Bridge No 3, and an outlet drain cleaned and cleared in Kanieri township,- and a large stone removed from Sedrlnn Terrace Road. STONE CRUSHER.

The stone crusher was operated for several days, and a quantity of metal crushed and crated out for repairs to Lower Kokatalii and the lower portion of Lake Kanieri Road. A full bin was also crushed for Back Creek Road repairs. ROAD ROLLER. The ten ton roller was in use for several days being occupied in rolling crushed metal and gravel on Lake Kanieri and Lower Kokatalii Roads. CONCRETE PIPES. Concrete pipe construction was put in hand the latter week in the month. PLANT. No I lorry was under repair for one day being overhauled and the rear wheels changed to the front, and vice versa, to allow the tyres to he more evenly worn. No 2 lorry was out of commission for a week owing to the radiator being worn out and beyond repair. One of the pinion drives in the front wheels al=o cut out, and a new one was procured and fitted. Tmediately the new radiator came to hand it was fitted, and No 2 lorry plneeil in commission without delay. All the plant, including road roller, stone crusher and engine, grader, and the two road lorries are in good order and well cared for. SOUTHERN RIDING.

Wnilnngi South Bank. The Contractor is making exceptional progress with the clearing, which has been heavy in parts, also with the surface formation and grubbing, which should ho completed at the end of the monll:. Granite Creek Bridge, Alain Highway. Tin's work is progressing favourably under the direction of the Bridge Foreman. No 1 lorry was sent down on Thursday and liad completed the pile driving by noon on Saturday, returning to Kanieri with the pile driving gear in readiness for new work in the Kokatalii district. The on ping and planking of the bridge and both approaches were well advanced at the end of the month. MAINTENANCE. The Roadman attended to repairs to Robertson, Petersen and Wanganui Flat Roads also to filling in an open crossing on Peterson and the construction of a concrete pipe culvert on Haddock-R obeli son, near Sutherland’s holding. All the roads are in fair order repairs in each case being well in hand. A load of 8 inch diameter concrete pipes, are required for renewals of small culverts, the necessary number being in stock at Kanieri. Repairs were effected to Detour. Okr.rito, and Wntaroa Flat Roads, sickness preventing Roadman Nolan from working for short periods during the month.
