PALMERSTON N., Aug. 16
A series of petty offences involving theft, false lire alarms, and damaging public telephones, were preferred against two youths, whose names were suppressed, and who also have been committed to the Supreme Court for theft on major charges at the Police Court this morning. Both were ordered to come up for sentence if called uopn. Magistrate Free remarked no doubt both accused will he adequately dealt with by the Supreme Court, where they appear for sentence on major charges. OIL PROSPECTING. GISBORNE, Aug. 16. The Taranaki Oilfields Ltd. reports: AVaipu No 2 well testing, water shut off on 15th August. Gisborne No. 1 well, depth 875 feet in sand and shale, caving in badly, now running a. 12! inch diameter easing.
THE CENSORSHIP OF PIC TURES. WELLINGTON. Aug. 16. Replying to a deputation to-day from the Public Questions Committee of the Presbyterian General Assembly, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Air Bollard. indicated that when the new censor was appointed there Will lie a tightening up of tin* regulations regarding c-lie class ol pictures to he screened in New Zealand.
MARVELS OF WIRELESS. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 10. According to the “Star’s” wireless writer, what is believed to he a unique discovery in wireless transmission and reception, has been made by .Mr Frank N. Sinclair, of Scarborough. Sumner. Shortly put, the discovery is that without the aid of batteries, or ordinary microphone, the common crystal sot with a pair of phones acts as a wireless I rausmitlcr when coupled to an aerial, and which placed close to the aerial is of value as a. receiver. Valve sets with an aerial system, picks up by induction from the crystal sets aerial. Music and speech delivered close to the crystal set phones in a house 120 feet away was reproduced by a. neighbouring valve set <m ,i loud speaker.
AN IMPUDENT THEFT. CHRISTCHURCH. Aug. 16. Charged with the theft of a roll of tweed from a tailor’s shop. Robert Richard John Davis was to-day .sentenced to six months’ with hard labour.
