FORMER SOLICITOR IN COURT.
AUCKLAND, Aug. Ki. A former Auckland solicitor, Jas. Lockwood Brady, was charged at the l’olice Court for being idle and disorderly and without means of support, and stealing four books valued at £3 the property of the Auckland City Council, and an overcoat the property of E. W. Buckingham. Regarding tne latter charge, evidence was given that the coat was left in the office where accused worked, and that he was returning it when arrested. Accused said ho bought three of the library hooks in a bundle_.at an auction sale and borrowed” the other hook‘while the subscriber to the library lost trace of it and forfeited his deposit. Albert Ramm said accused was in his employ anu earned approximately seventy pounds in commissions during tiie past six months:. Mr Cutton. S.M., reserved his judgment.
UNIVERSITY DEBATE. AUCKLAND. Aug. 16. A debate between the Auckland and Wellington Training College students at the University Hall. “That the Capitalistic Economic System is in the 'best interests of Civilisation,” in which the visitors took the l affirmative, resulted. Wellington 272 points, Auckland 263 points. The Judge. Professor Anderson, said the debate showed a good improve-, meat over previous contests.
