LIFE SAVING SHIELD. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 17. The AYigram Shield for the New Zealand Life-Saving Centres lias been awarded this year to AVanganui, with AA ellington second and Canterbury third.

GAOL FOR ASSAULT. DUNEDIN, Aug. 11. At the Police Court Joint Edward Hynes, 33, was sentenced to six mouths gaol tor assaulting his wife. It was stated that the wife, who was in hospital and unable to appear, had a broken nose, badly blackened eyes and injuries to the lower part of the body, where she had been kicked.
