THE PRINCE’S REFERENCE TO THE CROWN.

The Prince of Wales, speaking at a: dinner given by the Canadian Government at Ottawa, made what is probably bis first public, reference to bis future accession to the Throne. He remarked that it was the confederation of Canada CO years ago which marked, if not the first, at least the clearest step on the road to the conception and attainment of a group of autonomous coniniuuist.s within the British Empire equal in status, and marked by a common allegiance to tlie Crown. The Prime continued: ‘To me, in particular, as tlie Kings eldest eon, tlie conception has a special importance, ami, in whatever part of the Empire I may lie. I try always to keep it in mind. The Crown stands above all distinctions of country, race and party, and serves to make unity in which all such differences and transcended. If some day it should fall to my lot to assume that high responsibility. I trust 1 mav be found worthy of it. At least I may say that I lose no opportunity of keeping always fresh those contracts with all parts of the British Empire which I have been fortunate to make during the past ten years.” His Royal Highness emphasised the importance of personal man-to-man intercourse in Imperial affairs, for. lie said, he knew the value to himself of his personal visits overseas and of his meetings with visiters from overseas in London .
