TWO MONTHS IMPOSED. NAPIER, Aug. 8

Colvin Harris for converting a ear belonging to Leonard Whitelaw, of Wellington, to his own use was sentenced to two months.

POST OFFICE INSTALLED. WELLINGTON. Aug. 8. A regular post office has now been installed as Pitcairn island by arrangement between the High Commissioner of the Western Pacific and the New Zealand Government.

HUMAN SKELETON FOUND. GISBORNE, Aug. 8

-V human skeleton believed to be Rati Wiri Pnron, aged 53, who was reported missing from Port Awanui on June loth, Iff!7, was found in dense bush, between Pon Awanui and Reporura on Friday. Near the skeleton was a double barrelled shot gun Vying as if it bad been a,cross the body, and with two discharged cartridges in the breech. Portion of a live cartridge was found among the bones and parts of the skeleton and clothing were missing, but this can be accounted for as wild pigs are about in this region, and the body might have been attacked bv these animals.

The police do not suspect foul play and consider that death was caused either by accident or suicide.

DIPHTHERIA OUTBREAK. AUCKLAND, Aug. (>.

,l’p till noon 31 fresh eases of diphtheria. were reported to the Auckland District Health Office for the week, six of which were notified to-day. 'the total is made up of two eases in North Auckland, 11 in the central health district, five in South Auckland, and three in the Comma,ndel-Opotiki area. Dr Cliesson, Medical Officer of Health, said the cases were distributed over a verv large.' area, and there was no need for apprehension. The Health Department was fully alive to the position and had the matter well in band.

THIEVES RAID DRAPERS. CHRISTCHURCH. Aug. 8

• Over the week-end, thieves entered t!io premises of Graham, \\ ilson and Smcllie, drapers. High street, and stole a large quantity of goods valued at £31)0. Entrance was gained by the back door, which was fnrceii, in spite of the fact that it was provided with three locks.

The goods taken included shirts, hats and caps, lellars. socks, suit lengths, shawls, perfumes, pipes and suitcases. It is believed that the thieves bad a major ear waiting near the premises, and removed the goals in the stolen suitcases. The premises were locked at 13.30 on Saturday aftenwnn. and the theft was not discovered till this moi uing.

EARMER’S SUICIDE. DUNEDIN. Aug. 8,

The police have received informatia that Janies Alexander King, tanner, cf Ro.slyn, .was found hanging in : cowshed on Friday last, oil the iarm of Air William Boyd. Waiwera South, where the deceased was visiting.

Deceased bad been in ill-health and bad been worrying, but on Friday morning lie seemed well and had been preparing to pay a visit to Baldut 1m in company with Mr Ward Boyd. Deceased leaves a -wife anil four young children. The body was viewed by tb<> Coroner for the district, Mr H. J. Dixon. 8.V1., to allow interment, ard an inquest will be held at a later date.

CYCLTST KILLED. MASTERTON. Aug. 8

A fatality occurred on tlio main Masterton-C'artertou mail, a mile an ' a-lialf south of Master ton, about seven o’clock to-night, when George Judd, aged 03, a farmer, who was cycl'-" from his farm to Masterton. was run down from behind by a. ear. driven by Charles Stephens, a baker, of Carterton, who was proceeding to a Masonic gathering in Masterton. Heavy rain was falling at the time, and with the bitumciiised surface, tbe effectiveness of the head lamps was considerably reduced. It is stated that the car was travelling at a reasonable speed, but as the deeea.sed bad no reflector on tbe rear of bis cycle, be was not seen until it was too late In avert a collision. Tho cyclist was thrown on to bis bead, and died immediately, from a fracture of tbe skull.

CYCLE AND CAM COLLIDE. ROTORUA. Aug. 8

A collision between a motor-cycle, ridden by P. Maloney, and a "White Service ear, driven by "William Gilbertson, at the intersection of Amohau and Fenton Streets, resulted in Maloney being sent to the hospital with a broken leg. Tho motorist was carried some distance by tho big car, and bad a narrow escape from death.

OFFENDING MOTORIST. WELLINGTON, Aug. 9

The Magistrate's Court was engaged yesterday hearing a charge against a motorist, Mnclvor, who collided with a, stationary tram. The evidence went to show that though defendant was not sufficiently intoxicated to he arrested for drunkenness, lie was not in a tit state to drive a car. For tho defence it was contended the accident was due to the visibility being bad. owing to the state of the weather. The Magistrate said he was satisfied defendant was not in a fit state to drive the ear .and fined him £25 and £2 for driving without a license.

A BOLD THEFT.

CHRISTCHURCH. Aug. 9.

With a piece of brown paper under his arm, a man walked into tbe premises of tbe Cash Tailoring Company, Colombo St. yesterday, and took a roll of tweed valued at £ls from tbe counter. wrapped it up and walked quietIv out of the shop. He was seen, by Mr E. C. McDonald, manager of tbe business, who rushed out of the back door and met the man as be hurried down Tunm St. with tbe tweed in the parcel under his arm. A struggle fol lowed, bnt tbe man got away.

DRUNKEN’ DRIVER ARRESTED. WELLINGTON’, Aug. 8. John James McC'orquodale was today fined £25 for being in charge of a motor car at an early hour yesterday morning, while under the influence of liquor. He escaped bis license being endorsed by consenting to take out a prohibition order for two years. His counsel pleaded that accused not only required tbe car for bis business. but was a cripple, besides which his condition was not snch ns to warrant arrest in ordinary circumstances.
