It is understood the opossum season is proving a very profitable one to those engaged in trapping, particularly in the hack country, where the animals are found to he in very good condition and in excellent fur.
There is an epidemic of mumps in the Whtaroa district. A visitor to that locality last week reports that in numerous cases the whole household from father to young children are down with the maladv.
Several blue rats have recently been caught in the oppossum traps set in the Mount Egmont I’ark. also large numbers of stoats (states an exchange). The trappers say that this year the op possums are unusually fat. due to the plentitude of hinaii berries.
No undertaking could be given that the Government would pay rates owing to county councils by certain soldier settlers and Crown tenants, said the Minister of Lands, replying in the House to Mr A,. Bell, who had pointed out that many county councils were suffering from grave disabilities. The Minister pointed out that the local authorities had their legal means ol redress.

To-day entries for the AAestland Competitions close with the Secretary. Mr J. AV. Alorris. There is the promise of a large general entry, and a wider choice of the competitive work. Many of the juvenile sections are filling excellently. It is very pleasing to find the increased interest in the Competitions which serve so useful and educational a purpose in the equipment of the rising generation. Much local talent is sure to lie brought out bv this means.
At the annual meeting of the Nelson Progress League the report showed that the league was doing good workin pressing the claims of the district in proper quarters, and that tlie publicity campaign pointing out the province's attractions from a residential and scenic point of view was bearing good fruit. Regarding railway matters the following resolution was carried: “That this league, after again considering the arguments in favour of the various routes, emphatically reaffirms its previous decision to devote its energies to filling the gap by the completion of the line from Kawatiri to Inangahua Junction, via Murchison.”

There was an. excellent attendance at the Princess Theatre last evening for the screening of “The Big Parade.” If is a [)ictme of many emotions, and was followed with close interest by the audience'. It passes from grave to gav and from lively to severe, and is a remarkable demonstration of war times and the ordeals enforced on soldier and civilian alike. The Rev F. P. Kendall. 8.A., vicar of Gleninark since 1921, has resigned the cure, as from the end of September. lie has been forty-one years in orders, and tile whole of his ministry lias been served in this diocese, states the “Church News.” Made a deacon in 1880, he was priested in 1888, and had served as vicar in the cures of Boss, Kanieri, ('list, and Hangiora prior to going to Gleninark. He was \ ieur of Hangiora between 1892 and 1021— a period of twenty-nine years. It is the intention of Mr and .Airs Kendall to settle in Nelson lor their retirement front active parochial work.

The* question of a racing permit to tho Waikato Hunt Club to race oil Labour Day developed into more than a local dispute or a conflict between the Racing Conference and Minister when the Auckland District Committee decided not to pass the Hunt Club programme. This resolution, judging by its immediate sequel, placed the whole controversy on a new and wider basis, that of Racing Conference authority compared with that of Parliament. Such an issue is awkward, just when Sir George Hunter has before Parliament a private member's Bdl cc ntaining several matters highly desired by racing authorities. Tiiis is the weapon with which Parliament will realiate on the Racing Conference for endeavouring to thwart Ministerial plans.
