DELEGATES DISCUSS PROPOSALS BRISBANE, Aug. 5.

A meeting of union delegates, represenatives of the (Government and business men of Rockhampton and Afount Alorgan discussed proposals for the resumption of work at the Mount Alorgan mine. It was decided in the interests of all sections of the community that operations should he eontinned ns economically as possible. The meeting resolved itselt into a committee to draft a scheme for resumption, including Government assistance. . It is understood negotiations will he opened with the 1 iquiclut; of tlio Afount Alorgan Company to ascertain what conditions they are prepared to make for taking over the mine and works.

lAIPERSON ATOR SENTENCED. AIELBOURNE. Aug. 5

A prisoner, after being sentenced to four years for shop breaking, handed the Judge a written confession. He states that for seven years lie impersonated, a dead Australian soldier, and having brought disgrace on the soldier’s name wished to have this made public ancl the family name restored. He further stated the soldier’s mother had recognised him as her son and that Ite had led her to lielieve he was her son who had been killed in a brawl in New York.

The Judge in sentencing the prisoner said lie bad brought disgrace on a respectable family.,

BIG UPHEAVAL. SYDNEY, Aug. 5.

A mass meeting to-duv of the engineers striking against the introduction of piecework decided to adjourn their decision as to what action would he taken to combat the introduction of the daily-hiring system until Sunday, when meetings of a number of Unions of all the industries concerned will he held.

The men state that, rather than "ork under the daily-hiring system, they are prepared to go to gaol, and a serious upheaval is threatened.

ALARM TNG STORM. ADELAIDE, Aug. 5. The city has been deluged oy bailstorms. The stones were as large as pigeons’ eggs. During three separate storms, the electric lights failed, and all the traffic was held up. A fireball burnt in East Terrace. The flashes and sparks travelled in all directions, creating a considerable menace to the buildings in the vicinity. The storm has ruined the almond crop, and also most of the fruit crops in the district surrounding the city.
