HOKITIKA LIBRARY COMMITTEE.

Tho monthly meeting of the Commit teo took place at the Public Library at 7.10 o’clock. Present: Messrs 0. J. Evans (Chairman), J. AY. Alorris. G. Heinz,. .T. Niven and T)r Teiclielmatin.

The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed and l he outward correspondence approved. Accounts to the amount of £lO 15s lid were passed for payment. Fourteen new members were enrolled during the month, the report being received as very satisfactory.

The Chairman stated enquiry had been made from tlie Kokatahi district with regard t<> a supply of books for country subscribers. Tlie Chairman was asked to report at next meeting regarding a scheme to circulate the books in country districts where there was an adequate number of subscribers

to justify action. It was reported the New Zealand “Mirror” and the Australian “Home’ had been added to the magazines for the use specially of lady subscribers Airs Field had donated free copies of tlie Australian “Mirror,” received with

thanks. Tho Chairman stated Air H. At. Coulson had forwarded a souvenir of Kelson’s famous battleship “Victory,’ being a piece of the deck removed while the vessel was under overhaul. The exhibit which was received with thanks, was handed to Mr Niven for display in the museum room. The Chairman also handed in some interesting souvenirs received throng i Airs R. J. Scddon. One included a piece of red doth given by Captain (look to tlie grandfather of King George of Tonga, and presented by the King to the late Air Sodden. Ihe exhibit was authenticated by the fact that the descriptive card was in the handwriting of the .late Air 1 °’l- - invitation cards were handed in also to Air and Mrs Scddon, dated Alay '>s 1900, inviting them to the opening’«F the Tonga.. House of Parliament. Tlie card quaintly stated the ceremony was “at the tenth hour and thirty minutes and that you aie a owed to it. Give tlie ticket to the doorkeeper.” Another novel souvenir was a threepenny piece with a fine thread passed traversely through it, an example of the jeweller's art. presented originally tb Air Seddon bv Air JO C. Alorris, of Wellington, in .June. 1901. The exhibits were received with thanks and will he displayed in the museum room. _ The. meeting concluded at < -oO p.m.
