HOKITIKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
MONDAY, AUG. Ist
The Committee met at 7 p.m. Present: Rev. J. AY. Hayward (Chairman). Messrs Richards, Clarke, Shannon, Redder, Orr, Swenev. and Canning (lion, sec.) An apology for absence was made for Mi- Coulson.
The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. IMV AMD CORRESPONDENCE. Ernm Minister of Health, Wellington, acknowledging motion re dental clinic and appreciating the referoiu c. — Received. Emm CluLiin McKenzie, Jubilee Blind Institute, inviting orders for mats or waste paper baskets.—Received; to be procured when required. From Canterbury Education Board forwarding Inspector’s report.—Received. AJr Shannon referred to the references appearing in the press, suggesting a possibility of the abolishment of Education Boards, and the increase of centralisation at Wellington. Ho moved that the Committee place on record its appreciation of the work of Education Boards, and to express the opinion that before any alteration was made to the present system. School Committee should be advised of the proposals to enable them, to consider them. Seconded by Air Redder. Afr Richards thought that il would lie wise to wait till it was seen what the proposed scheme would he. which might be for the better. The motion was agreed to.
The Visiting Corn mi tee (Messrs Richards and Shannon) reported on small requirements needed, and suggested the erection of a low fence along the garden plot.— Received. The Rector (.Mr E. Partridge) reported the attendance was improving and the average attendance for the four weeks was 246. 267. 270. 275 primary and 88. 8.7. 85, 87 secondary, the roll numbers being 297 and 90 respectively. Afiss AVilson was absent on sick leave. Further books had been procured for the library. £9 8s 7d had been received for the fuel fund. Afiss Bruce had been notified that her services had been retained till October. Afr Richards had repaired the organ w hich was now in good order. Various matches had been played by the football and basket ball teams last Saturday. The next term holidays would commence on 29th. August; recommending a small rustic fence he erected alongside the garden plot ; suggesting a new supply of jerseys for the school football team.—Received. A vote of thanks was passed to Air Richards for attention to the organ. It was resolved that a rustic fence he included in the ornamentation scheme, and lie proceeded with when funds are available. Accounts as scheduled were passed for payment. Af esses Redder and Conning were appointed visitors for the month. The Committee rose at 8.5 p.m.
