A crowd of 1000 people attended the rep. came between Hawke’s Bay and Taranaki here this afternoon, the result being a draw. 8 all. The overhead conditions were fine, but the past two days’ rain had made the ground very soft, and the struggle was mainly a forward one. This apparently suited both teams, for the forwards gave a great dispi'ay. It was a gruelling contest, the honours being fairly evenly distributed. With the wind in their favour, Taranaki scored first, after 30 minutes’ play. Brown passing to Enniss, who crossed and Brown converted. A lew minutes later four Hawke’s Hay forwards indulged in a passing bout, J. Gemmefl scoring, and Gretiside equalised, there being no alteration in the score at the interval. Within five minutes of the change over, Maurice Brownlie scored from a line-out. the try not being converted. Hawke’s Bay had the best of the play for a long time. Thou Taranaki came to light, and in the dying stages they were superior. Alter a passing bout, Brown scored a try on tlie call of lime, but failed to convert it. Mr B. Baton, of Wellington, refereed. WAIRARAPA DEFEAT .MAORIS. MAKTFRTON, July 27. Before mi attendance of over two thousniul, tho Maori touring team was to-day licatcn by Wairarapa by 10 points to 11. Tbo weather was clear, but the {'round had received a thorough soaking since Sunday, and quickly (burned into a very difficult playing surface. Considering the handicap the game was exceptionally good ; in fact, at times it reached brilliant heights, especially in the second spell, when the Maoris settled down.
A. feature of the game was Oundy’s kicking, which produced nineteen points. He converted eight of the ten tries scored by Wairarapa. and kicked a penalty goal. Tries were scored bv Guy. llooth (2), Stringfellow (2). Parker (2). Irvine, Reid. TToioriti and Rob Booth. Pelham and Rene scored for the Maoris, Potaka converting one and kicking a penalty. It is interesting to record that there were no stoppages for injury.
COLLEGE MATCH. AUCKLAND, July 27. Tn the annual Rugby match to-day. Wanganui Collegiate School defeated King’s College by 16 to I t. ’WELLINGTON’S EASY WIN. WELLINGTON, July 27. The first representative Rugby game of the season to be played locally was decided to-day, when South Cantorburv met Wellington. The visitors were soundly beaten by 22 points to :i points. The good form displayed by the Wellington backs was a feature of the game. About .‘IOOO spectators witnessed the game. The weather was dull and cheerless, with a light southerly breeze, and the ground was somewhat greasy, after the recent rains. Nevertheless . the local team gave a creditable showing, the forwards securing the ball in the scrums, and the backs handling well, to let the wingers do most ot the scoring. The visiting hacks were weak, though Forrester gave a good display at wing three-quarter. Wellington’s victory by 22 points to 0 about representing the respective merits of the contending sides.
