QUESTIONS AXD 1! El’Ll MS. WELLINGTON. July 20 lu the House this afternoon Air T.ysnnr asked the Prime Minister: (1) If it is true that one of the Samoans who made representations on behalf of disaffected natives to the H -n Mr Noswortby has since been deported? (2) llow many disaffected natives of Samoa have been deported since Clause 6 (I) of the Samoan immigration consolidation order lias been amended so as to give power to the Administrator To 'order any person to leave Samoa without trial? (3) According to the Minister for External Affairs’ statement in to-day’s Press, tlie Administrator of Samoa has cancelled the licenses of two traders. AVill the Prime Al blister inform the house, (a) under what anfliority are these licenses cancelled:- Is it by further (>rder-in-Couneil ? (b) AVliose trading licenses have been cancelled? To tlie first question the Prime Alinister replied’ in the negative, hutadded that the Administrator had found it necessary, acting on the advice of an impartial committee of chiefs, to remove live of the Samoan members of tlie Citizens' Commitlteo Irom Apia. The remaining Samoan member bad been imprisoned alter trial by the High Court.
In reply to the second part of the question, Air Coates said ‘‘none.” Proceeding. Air Coates s- •<! that trading licenses were cancelled under the
authority of the taxation, licensing, and revenue amendment ordinance. 1921, which provided that: "Where the Administrator is satisfied that the. granting to any person of any new license, or the" bidding by any person ol any existing license may prejudicially affect tlie peace, order, or good government of the territory, be may order that no such license shall be granted to that (lerson. or that such existing license shall be cancelled." Air Coates said that no official advice ns to the cancellation of trading licenses had been received.
