THE COUNCIL. WELLINGTON. July 28

•Six weeks’ leave of absence was granted Hon. Shailer Weston on account of ii’l health. Sir J. Allen, Sir Sinclair, Sir F. 1). Bell, and Hons. Barr, (low, Hunan. Isitt. Heed and Smith were appointed a committee to act with the committee appointed by the House to consider the petitions concerning Samoan administration.

The Samoa Amendment Bill was introduced from the House and read a first time without discussion.

In the committee stage on the Animals Protection and Game Amendment Bill, Sir T. MaoKenzie agreed to an amendment to meet an objection raised by Sir 11. Rhodes, who pointed out that {lie effect of the measure, which is sought to protect native birds, was also to protect other birds, which were not native birds, notably starling ana brown owl, which were enemies of the native birds. The hill was reported as amended, but the third reading was deferred.

The Council adjourned at 3.18 p.m until 2.30 p.m. next day.

THE lIOI’SK. The House met at 2.30. Replying to a question, the Premier said a special effort was being made to secure the fuli'est information about unemployment, so that whatever was possible to give relief could he done to the best advantage. The following bills wore read a first time:—Wellington City and Suburban Water Supply (Mr Fraser); (Jreytnwn Trust, Lands Trustees Empowering ( Hon. .McLeod) ; Juries Amendment No. 2 (Mr li. (.!. R. Mason) ; Christchurch Tramway District Amendment fAIr Sullivan). The motion for the second reading of the Preferential Voting Bill (Mr AKa milbs) was defeated by -I t to 22.
